No More Excuses

Hi!

My name is Sydney Wuensch, I am 19 years old and a sophomore in college. I am studying

Media Arts and Science with a specialization in Digital Storytelling. To clarify, I am learning the ins and outs of how to market a brand so that customers believe in the brand story or purpose. This could also translate into the television or advertising industries by creating scripts and stories for developing shows or brands.

Now that you have gotten to know a bit more about me, I’ll get into a bit more of my own

“brand” story. At the beginning of this soon to be weirdest year of mine and many of our lives, I wrote down a few goals. One of them was getting into digital illustration as well as potentially selling my artwork. This goal had been pulling on my heart for about a year before I finally decided to commit to it. I put it off for the first 2 months of the year and then March rolled around. And quarantine commenced. I no longer had to commute to campus, sit in class for 4+ hours per day, or even get out of my sweatpants. Needless to say, I had more time on my hands then I was ever used to before, leaving me with no excuse. So, I picked up my iPad I had bought for school a year prior and downloaded Procreate. I also opened up my Etsy shop.

My process has evolved but most of my illustrations begin by finding a picture I like on Pinterest or Instagram and illustrating it in my style. Once I started gaining a small following on Instagram, people began to ask me for custom portraits. This was great because I was also furloughed from my part-time job due to COVID-19. My Etsy became a place to purchase custom portraits as well as prints of the illustrations I post on my Instagram. Balancing the end of my freshman year of college and making a dream of mine a reality allowed for quarantine to be a period of growth instead of regression. Although it has been one of the weirdest periods in my life, I know I will look back and be proud of how I used this time.

A piece of advice I would give to women is to go for the dream you can’t stop thinking about. Don’t wait for the perfect time or just the right amount of motivation. Not to steal Nike’s slogan but, JUST DO IT! The perfect time is now, and motivation will come and go. Once you begin, that dream you can’t stop thinking about will be hard to quit.

Present-day I am still illustrating what I love and posting my illustrations Instagram 3-4x per week. Editorial photography has been my biggest inspiration for my work lately. I have also found a passion advocating for body positivity, the Black Lives Matter movement, and LGBTQ+ rights. I am also still open to custom illustrations, from people to pets, I got you! Purchase custom illustrations or art prints on Etsy.

DM me on Instagram if you have any other questions or interests!
