Hello! My name is Emma and I run a design business called Emma Kate Design. First, I want to thank Rebel Compass for having me write a guest post. I am so excited to share my story!
Like many digital artists, I decided to start my business during quarantine. I have always loved graphic design and am majoring in it at The University of Kansas. I love trying new techniques, effects and learning new programs. I work primarily in the Adobe programs Illustrator, Photoshop and Lightroom. I was so impressed by the illustration technique I kept seeing all over Instagram and decided to give it a shot. I am blown away by the love and support the artist community has shown me.
To backtrack just a bit, I got into graphic design my Freshman year of high school and have been in love with it ever since. I joined my high school’s journalism staff as a designer and over the years I held multiple editor positions. I was the online design editor and the newspaper design editor. Through journalism I was able to discover my passion for design, which led me to choose it as my major in college and future career. I love design because I love creating art that makes people feel. Whether it makes them happy, sad, or makes them think, I really enjoy seeing the way my work can impact the world. One thing that I hope to accomplish through graphic design is to help people by creating everything from logos to package design to family portraits.
My Instagram account, @emmakate.design, began as a photography account. I was originally going to study to be a photographer but my interest in design was much stronger. I have recently opened a Red Bubble account to sell some of my favorite designs as stickers. If you are interested you can find the link in my Instagram bio. I am so thankful for everyone who is interested in my art and encourages me to keep creating, it means the world to me.
Some advice that I would give people who are just starting out is to not be afraid. It is definitely more than a little daunting to share your work with other people. I think some of the most important things you can do is to just go for it and seek feedback from others. I remember feeling as though no one would think that I was talented and almost ended up not creating my account. To get over this fear, I practiced and practiced my techniques until I felt confident enough to share my art. I also showed it to multiple people before I put it out into the world. One day, you’ll be the person that others who are just starting out will look up to. I hope that I can encourage those who are thinking about starting a business or an art account to go ahead and do it because even if you don’t think so, there are people out there who will love what you do.
~Emma
