Determining Greatness

Updated: Jul 16, 2020

Hey there! I’m Afton Beard, co-owner of the recently launched blog “Inevitable Entropy.” I’ve always been a firm believer in diving right into things, because if you never try, you’ll never succeed!

One day, I went up to my older sister, McKay, who has been talking about starting a blog for awhile now, and told her to get her computer right then because we were going to create a website. It startled her a little bit, because she replied with “Oh! Right now?!” After dozens of hours, we finally clicked publish, and I’m so grateful that we did!

My sister has her own reasons for biting the bullet and creating the blog (I’ll give you a bit of a spoiler: she has two crazy yet loving little girls that keep her on her toes! She loves that her life isn’t perfect, and wants to help everyone else embrace chaos and imperfection in their lives.) but my reasons are a little separate from hers.

My entire life I have pushed myself to go above and beyond in everything I do: school, piano, friendships, service, etc.. It was all incredibly overwhelming; I knew I was capable of greatness, but up until recently I couldn’t even drive. Our world is so busy that often people feel they need to do everything, to be everything, in order to be great. It wasn’t until I was older and gained maturity that I found that greatness has different meanings depending on the individual. Some people measure their greatness in fame or economic status. Some people measure their greatness in awards. I measure my greatness in the experiences that I have and the people I meet.

This is the very reason I started Inevitable Entropy; I love to travel. I love to explore new places and delve into their culture. It has always been my dream to travel the world, with all of Europe as my first destination. My success and greatness is measured by the places I travel and the adventures I go on. Nothing brings me more joy than grabbing my camera and experiencing a town or going on a new hike.

Furthermore, I started Inevitable Entropy because I wanted to connect with the world. Thanks to the internet and social media, we have the opportunity to meet people we otherwise wouldn’t have met. It is such a wonderful thing! These people shape our beliefs and ideas and help to fuel our experiences. (Rebel Compass is such a wonderful project, bringing people together by their unique stories and experiences, how brilliant!)

Now more than every we are presented with opportunities to fulfill our dreams, whatever they may be. We are blessed to have resources at our fingertips so that we can live up to the greatness we each aspire to me. There’s no right or wrong answer to determining your greatness. It may be becoming a master at a skill or an expert at a subject. Or it may be striving to be a service oriented individual that changes the world through kindness.

Whatever it may be, I challenge you to find your definition of greatness, the type of person you want to become, and hold on to it. Never let go. Happiness comes from within, and that starts with fulfilling your goals.
